Description

The Ironfang Legion is a disciplined, highly organized hobgoblin military force dedicated to the perfection of warfare. Founded 150 years ago by a cadre of battle-hardened hobgoblins, the Legion has grown into a fearsome war machine, known for its unbreakable formations, ruthless efficiency, and relentless pursuit of order. Unlike chaotic warbands or disorganized hordes, the Ironfang Legion operates with strict hierarchy, tactical precision, and unwavering discipline, making it one of the most formidable military factions in goblinoid history.

The Legion venerates Zarklazz , a goblin deity representing martial prowess, discipline, and controlled fury. Every soldier is expected to embody the ideals of duty, strength, and obedience, with failure being severely punished and excellence rewarded with rank and honor.

From their stronghold, Ironhold Fortress , the Ironfang Legion expands its influence, seeking strategic dominance over battlefields, fortresses, and key territories. Their ultimate goal is to forge a world where order reigns supreme, and only the strong survive under the banner of the Legion.

Hierarchy

The Ironfang Legion's structure is rigid, with rank determined by martial skill, battlefield leadership, and unwavering loyalty. Statblocks

1. General (Level 10–12)
Title: General Varek Ironfang (Current Leader)
Role: The absolute ruler of the Legion, overseeing all military operations, strategy, and expansion efforts. Commands all lesser officers and determines the future of the Legion.

2. War Council (Level 8–10)
A small group of high-ranking officers, tacticians, and priests of Zarklazz who act as the General’s closest advisors. Includes:
Warmasters – High-ranking battlefield commanders.
- Warmaster Drazul Bloodfury
Tacticians – Experts in siege warfare, ambush tactics, and logistics.
Battle-Priests – Warpriests and clerics who maintain the Legion’s ideological purity and morale.

3. Legion Captains (Level 7–9)
Lead battalions of 50–100 soldiers, directing battle formations and enforcing discipline.
Promotions are earned through victories and loyalty—failure means demotion or execution.

4. Veteran Sergeants (Level 5–7)
Serve as officers on the front lines, ensuring that soldiers follow orders without hesitation.
Often former foot soldiers who have survived numerous battles.

5. Ironfang Soldiers (Level 1–4)

Expected to be disciplined, obedient, and unwavering.
New recruits must endure brutal training regimens before being accepted as full Legion members.

6. Auxiliaries & Mercenaries

Given little respect unless they prove themselves worthy.

Cultural Practices

The Code of Iron

The Ironfang Legion follows a strict martial code known as the Code of Iron, which dictates:

Obedience is Absolute – Orders from superiors must be followed without question.
Strength Determines Worth – Only the strongest warriors advance in rank.
Discipline Over Emotion – Personal desires and emotions are weaknesses.
Victory is the Only Honor – There is no glory in reckless heroism—only in winning.

The Ritual of the Blade

New recruits must undergo a brutal trial by combat where they are pitted against each other in controlled duels.
Only those who demonstrate discipline, skill, and endurance are accepted.

The Blood Oath

Upon achieving the rank of Legion Captain or higher, warriors must swear a Blood Oath before a Battle-Priest of Zarklazz. Breaking this oath is punishable by death or exile.

Martial Worship of Zarklazz

Priests of Zarklazz lead war chants and battle rites before every engagement.
Those who die in battle while upholding the Legion’s code are honored and their names engraved onto the fortress walls.
Cowards and deserters are executed publicly as a warning to others.

The Art of War

Every member of the Legion must constantly train in combat, strategy, and siege warfare. Reading and analyzing historical battles is common among officers, and failure to learn from past mistakes is considered a grave weakness.

Relations with other Goblinoids

Goblin Tribes: Considered useful but undisciplined. Goblins who follow orders are accepted as auxiliaries, but those who embrace chaos are crushed without hesitation.
Bugbear Warbands: Viewed as brutish but effective. The Legion hires bugbears as shock troops, though they are closely monitored to prevent insubordination.
Other Legions or Hordes: Respected as worthy rivals or potential allies. However, any who challenge Ironfang’s authority are dealt with swiftly.
