Citation
Citation is important because it allows the wiki to demonstrate that a statement is true and beyond dispute. Articles with statements lacking citations run the risk of becoming disputed, and this is often more complicated than providing a good citation in the first instance.
Consider first what you are citing in order to decide which template is most appropriate.
- Books
- {{Cite book}} for citing print products (novels or sourcebooks)—in general, you can use
{{Cite book/Name of book|page number}}
—see Category:Citation templates for a huge list. Most of the novels and sourcebooks should already have their own template. If not, you might have to create one or request that one is created for you. - Web sites
- {{Cite web}} for citing a website. Individual web pages are rarely cited often enough to justify a subtemplate.
Informational boxes (infoboxes)
- See also: Help:Infoboxes
Infoboxes concisely summarize common elements among related articles.
Real-world pages
- {{Accessory}} for a non-book accessory product.
- {{Infobox/Book}} for an article about an adventure, sourcebook, or novel.
- {{Map}} for an article about a map product.
- {{Miniatures}} for an article about a tabletop miniature product.
In-setting pages
- See Category:Navboxes for a list of available navbox templates.
Navboxes provide a means for navigating between related articles, such as a nation's settlements, a creature's species, or products within a product line.
Successionbox
Another type of navigational template is a successionbox designed to link successive lineages, such as for heads of state. The basic form is here: {{Successionbox}}; but see Category:Navigational templates for a list of available pre-made successionbox templates.
Chronology
- {{Yearbox}} is for allowing quick navigation from one year to nearby years.
- {{Yearbox/deaths}}, {{Yearbox/in-politics}}, {{Yearbox/migrations}}, etc. are all templates to divide an article about events in a certain year into obvious sections by topic.
